With Northup-Hoover, Old Fifth Has Chance to Regain Lost Influence

The last time voters in the “old fifth” had one of their own in Kentucky’s Governor’s office was 1931. That’s when Knox County pol Flem “Flam” Sampson was Governor. Sampson is best known for his efforts to create the Kentucky Colonel system and the Kentucky Progress Commission.

While there isn’t a candidate from the old fifth in the race this year, Jeff Hoover, who’s running for Lt. Governor under Anne Northup, would be a nice consolation prize for the region.

Here’s what Northup said about Hoover last week:

Northup said Hoover, who has represented Russell and Clinton counties and part of Pulaski County in the state House since 1997, was her first choice for a running mate. But to be sure, she said she asked five "very knowledgeable" Kentucky Republicans, whom she declined to name, to make a list of top choices for her.

"Every one of them put Jeff Hoover at the top," Northup said.

She called Hoover on Jan. 5 to gauge his interest in being her lieutenant governor, and the two agreed to talk again. Last Sunday, after extensive discussions, the ticket was a go.

Northup also made it clear that she wanted a better relationship with her No. 2 than recent governors..."I said 'I want you in the same office suite,'" Northup recalled saying to Hoover. "'And I want the relationship I had with my chief of staff in Washington with you, where we can walk into each others' office and we can have every open conversation that needs to be had.'"

You were right to spotlight Alessi's article... The fifth has lost its influence and with RINO Anne, they are not going to get it back...

Anne Nortup a RINO? Tell me David, just who is a real Republican? She has impeccable ratings from the NRA, the ACU...

I guess those folks are just a bunch of idiots who don't care or know about "conservativism" as much as you do?

Give me a break!

She is a pork barrel spender with a running mate not endorsed by right to life... Impeccable rating? Please, just check out my blog...

KS,

Two things: 1st, Right to Life has made clear that they didn't endorse Hoover because he failed to complete their survey. Do you know how many surveys candidates receive when running for office? He was running unopposed, there was no good reason to fill out every survey he got. Do you know how many unopposed candidates there are who don't seek these types of endorsements? Tons. I see you running around the internet peddling this bs when you know darn good and well that he is strongly pro-life. Tell you what, point out one vote he has ever had that is not pro-life, and I will call him out myself. But if you can't do that, we'll all assume you're just spinning.

2cnd - maybe you could offer proof that Anne Northup is a pork barrel spender. I think you believe that because Anne was on the appropriations committee and brought back a lot of funds for her district. Maybe you don't understand how Congress works. Congress as a whole sets the budget. Appropriators then decide where the money will be spent. They don't increase the budget at all. And if you are on the appropriations committee, it would be a huge diservice to your constituents if you failed to fight for your district's fair share. So pushing for district funding as an appropriator and being fiscally conservative is not at all inconsistent. Anne was always known in Congress as someone who held the line on spending - not a big spender.

Are you diluted? KY Conservative, I know how Congress works and I also know how campaigns work... Hoover could have had an intern fill out what amounted to five minutes... But enough on that... She is a pork barrell spender if you read the New York Times article on how she tried to save Republican seats with ear marks... I know congress sets the budget... By I dont believe the founding fathers tucked a "if politically necessary" clause into the Constitution...

You're right. I've seen the light. She's a liberal. And those idiots at the ACU, the NRA, and the Right to Life crowd know not of what they speak. And how about the nerve of the Jim Bunning guy. What kind of conservative bona fides does he have? There's no way the voters of Kentucky will fall for the idea that Anne's conservative... even with that right wing cabal trying to trick us.

Give me strength!

Northup held the spending line? She supported unlimited earmarks.

And you asked for one Hoover vote not pro-life?

KS,

I am neither diluted or deluded, I just happened to be better informed than you.

Your Club for Growth Link doesn't mention Northup at all. Could you be more specific? I would like to check out the article you meant to point us to.

Also, your earlier answer makes it clear that you really don't know how the process works. Earmarks don't increase spending. Not a dime. Budgets increase spending. Earmarks allow appropriators to tag a certain amount of money that has ALREADY been appropriated to go to a specific area or program.

For example, $100,000 gets appropriated to Lexington from a program for cutting the rate of teen pregnancy. I am Lexington's representative, and I want to make sure that not all of that money goes to Planned Parenthood. So I earmark a portion to go to a faith-based abstinence program instead. This was the original intent of earmarks. They were there to allow local officials, along with members of Congress to be able to have some say in how money was being spent in their districts.

Of course, the problem with earmarks is that they became a tool for the corrupt to funnel money to projects in return for kickbacks. The reason they could do this, is that earmarks are not transparent. They can be slipped into a bill, literally in the dark of night, with no one the wiser.

So how do we know Northup didn't do this? Because she gave a full accounting of all of her earmarks for each term while she was in Congress.

Northup's solution to the earmark problem was not to eliminate them, but to provide full transparency. People like Duke Cunningham could never have gotten away with what they did if everyone knew what they were doing. And the total elimination of earmarks does nothing but remove a useful tool.

Again, Anne Northup is a conservative. Just because the Fletcher folks are trying to spin it differently doesn't make it so. My prediction: this too will backfire on Ernie's team. The gang that can't shoot straight has gotten another one wrong, and as people realize this, it will just be another blow to their credibility. In the end, people are going to jump off that ship - it's sinking.
