Thomas PM Barnett has this interesting piece on his blog about immigration. It’s not just an American phenomenon, and Americans actually have relatively fewer foreign born residents than several western democracies.
BTW, who’d have ever guessed that Polish immigrants consider Bison Grain Vodka a must have in Germany?

Meanwhile, shar'i'a law becomes an integral part of the common law tradition in Britain, and whatever the equivalent is of common law elsewhere on the continent formerly known as Europe.
We're eager to fight a conventional "war on terror" in places where the bad guys can never harm us, while leaving our own borders wide open and our own culture unappreciated. It's only a matter of time before our geographic cushion (an ocean of separation) wanes in effectiveness, and we awaken to find ourselves surrounded by the same forces now commiting blackmail against Old Europe.
