Northup Hits Gusher of Support in Bid to Drill More Oil
Mark Hebert is reporting that Anne Northup is closing the gap against John Yarmuth, thanks largely, the Northup campaign says, to her approach to drill more oil. Seems the voters of the ‘Ville are more concerned about the pinch at the pumps than the penguins in ANWR. What about all that stuff Jake has been telling us that this one’s over?

The ANWR issue is not just about caribou (penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, not Alaska) or other wildlife in the refuge (such as migratory birds), it is also about the people who, directly or indirectly, benefit from those animals. It is about the indigenous Gwi'ichin who depend on the caribou for food. It is about the people throughout North and South America who benefit from the ecological services provided by the migratory birds, such as pest control (many birds eat insects and birds of prey keep rodent populations under control) and seed germination for plants we find useful. Our effects on the environment often wind up affecting us (as seen when landslides and floods result from deforestation of areas of heavy rainfall).
